Jill Kinney

Founder, Chairman

Jill Kinney is considered an industry leader in the world of health and fitness and earned her title as “America’s Number One Female Entrepreneur.” Jill received a Distinguished Service Award from the International Health Racquet and Sportsclub Association (IHRSA) and has been inducted into the Wellness Revolution Hall of Fame. As the Founder of Club One, she built her fitness club dream into a $95 million dollar business with over 2,500 employees and 100 clubs throughout the US. In 2014, Jill and partners Bill McBride and Carey White founded Active Wellness and acquired the majority of Club One's assets, restructuring the company into one of the country’s leading integrated fitness services companies. 

Bill McBride

Co-Founder, President and CEO

In addition to co-founding Active Wellness with partners Jill Kinney and Carey White, Bill McBride leads all business operations for the company. He is a health club and wellness leader with over 25 years of experience leading and managing all aspects of commercial health clubs, medical fitness centers, residential, community, multi-tenant and corporate fitness sites. Bill has served as Chairman of the International Health, Racquet & Sportsclub Association (IHRSA) Board of Directors, President of the Mid-Atlantic Club Management Association (MACMA) and served on the Industry Advisory Board for the American Council of Exercise (ACE). He is actively engaged as an author on industry education, serves on several fitness-related technology company Advisory Boards, serves on the Medical Wellness Association (MWA) and Medical Fitness Network (MFN) Advisory Boards and speaks regularly on industry topics throughout the world.

Carey White

Co-Founder, CFO

Together with Jill Kinney and Bill McBride, Carey White co-founded Active Wellness and currently serves on Active’s Board and as its CFO. Carey also serves as Chairman of the Feeding Your Kids Foundation, which operates an international program that teaches parents how to feed their children healthier and have a healthier attitude toward food, and as the chairman of the audit committee of Landmark Infrastructure Partners LP (NASDAQ: LMRK) since its initial public offering in 2014. Carey received a BA from Stanford University and an MBA from Harvard Business School. He is a Certified Public Accountant (inactive) in the state of California.

Michele Wong

Vice President of Operations

Michele Wong entered the fitness industry motivated by her passion for helping people live a healthy lifestyle. In 1999, she began her management career in corporate partner management running fitness centers and developing wellness programs for Silicon Valley’s Fortune 100. During her 18 years in partner management, she has led the development of operational best practices, award-winning member engagement programs, and customized wellness solutions. Michele is experienced in operating in various fitness delivery models and has a proven track of building high performing teams and exceeding client expectations through shared strategic vision, industry expertise, and strong business acumen. Michele is a WELCOA Faculty Member, member of ASCM, and ACE subject matter expert on Health Coaching, and holds an MS in Kinesiology with an emphasis in Nutritional Science.

Michael Rucker, Ph. D.

Vice President of Technology

Michael has two decades of professional experience in technology, marketing and digital strategy, which includes two C-level tenures and a portfolio of industry accolades for various enterprise level achievements. His body of work includes innovative solutions for companies such as Sony, Universal Studios, Red Bull, and Realogy. This year Michael received his Ph.D. in Organizational Psychology focusing on effective workplace wellness strategies, and was also distinguished as one of the top 50 influencers in digital health by the analyst group Onalytica.

Kari Bedgood

Vice President of Marketing & PR

Kari Bedgood oversees the marketing and public relations functions for Active Wellness. She leads an innovative, results-driven team responsible for lead generating marketing campaigns, brand management and strategic communications that support the company’s sales and growth objectives. Prior to joining Active Wellness in 2014, Kari was Vice President of Marketing and PR for Club One and also worked for Ketchum’s Brand Marketing and Consumer Food account management teams serving clients such as 24 Hour Fitness, Kikkoman and Clorox. She has been a featured speaker on Marketing best practices for industry associations including IHRSA and Club Industry. Kari earned her Bachelors of Arts in Journalism from Indiana University, Bloomington.

Meredith DePersia

Vice President of Human Resource Operations

Meredith DePersia is charged with operational continuity and standards as they relate to Human Resources across our company, as well as employee relations, benefits and compliance. Meredith joined Active Wellness in March 2014. Prior to Active, she was the Vice President of Commercial Clubs at Club One, serving in leadership roles such as General Manager, Regional Manager and Director of Operations throughout her 11 year tenure. She holds a Bachelor of Science in Human Nutrition, Foods and Exercise, a Master of Science in Exercise and Health Promotion and a Professional in Human Resources (PHR) certification.

Marcia Franks

Director of Operations - West Coast

Marcia is Active Wellness' Director of Operations overseeing the company's day-to-day activities on the West Coast. She is responsible for developing and implementing operational best practices that help our teams deliver an exceptional member experience. She has held various management roles over her 10+ years in the industry including Assistant General Manager, General Manager, Multi-Site General Manager and Regional Manager. Throughout her career leading high-performing teams, she is driven by her passion for people, team development and operational excellence.

Debbie Heisler

Director of Operations - East Coast

Deb is Active Wellness' Director of Operations overseeing the company's day-to-day activities on the East Coast. She is responsible for developing and implementing operational best practices that help our teams deliver an exceptional member experience. Prior to taking on this role, she has held various management positions in her 15+ years in the industry including Group Exercise Director, Program Manager, General Manager and Regional Manager. Deb is experienced working with a diverse set of partners including; universities, corporations, multi-tenant sites, community centers and commercial facilities. In addition, she has worked  to help build the training and development program for the company to help engage, retain and develop team members. She holds a Bachelors from the State University of New York at Oswego and a Masters from the University of South Florida.

John Penacerrada

Director of Fitness & Programming

John has 20 years of experience in the Health and Fitness Industry and is an expert in Kinesiology, Corrective Exercise, and Functional Training. His body of work includes the oversight of multiple corporate wellness accounts and the professional development of Active's personal trainers and fitness professionals. In addition to his role with Active, John is also a faculty member at San Francisco State University and mentors college students interested in pursing careers in the industry. He remains up-to-date with the latest health and fitness research.

Karah Weldy

Director of Wellness

Karah drives the development of our Wellness in a Box program which delivers comprehensive tools, features and resources to our staff so they can best support members in improving their overall health. With 9 years of experience in the health & fitness industry, Karah’s educational programming & research skills will be utilized to provide current topics with live monthly webinars and interactive on-demand educational training tools.

Justin Honas

Design & Procurement Manager

Justin Honas is the Procurement & Design Project Manager for Active Wellness. He supports all of Active's fitness centers across the country with equipment consulting, design, extraction, purchasing, and installation. Justin’s attention to detail, partnerships with key vendors and communication skills drive consistent and relative results for Active and our partners. Prior to taking on this role, he held various positions in his decade long fitness industry career, including fitness training, university research and club management.

IHRSA has formed the Innovation & Technology Advisory Council that includes our VP of Technology Mike Rucker. IHRSA Chair Rasmus Ingerslev announced the formation of the council in September 2016 as a means to reach out to the technology community, within and outside of the fitness industry, to help identify important technology-related issues and trends. We're excited to see the great things this Council will do.

Building healthy, active communities means investing our energy and time to charitable causes and volunteer opportunities. Our sites throughout the US are empowered to give back and serve their communities. We also host company-wide fundraising initiatives to bring awareness and support to Global organizations.

2016 Active Wellness In-kind & Monetary Donations: $11,535

(and counting!)

Active hosted its first company-wide fundraiser raising $11,326 for Augie's Quest to end ALS/Lou Gehrig's Disease in partnership with ALS.net, and we look forward to hosting this company-wide fundraiser again in January 2017. 2015 Active Wellness In-kind & Monetary Donations: $12,529

In 2015, our commercial health clubs - Active Sports Clubs contributed $11,400 worth of in-kind and monetary donations, benefiting the North Bay Down Syndrome Association, Petaluma, San Francisco and Marin County School Districts and the Sonoma/Petaluma State Historic Parks Association, to name a few.
